“Family”

“Family”.    What does that mean to you?  Is it restricted to bloodlines, genealogical roots, or more?

Recently, while on a cruise with our family in the Western Caribbean I had the most random thing happen.  We were at a bar on the top deck of the ship minutes after boarding and I saw a familiar face walking toward me.  It was truly one of those moments where you recognize the person, but they just should not be where they are.  As he approached I could not believe my eyes.  Of all the places in the world at that moment one of my good friends and co-captains on my High School wrestling team was standing in front of me.  We hadn’t seen each other in over two decades and here he was!   During the week we got to meet up and catch up on life and it was almost like we never missed a beat.  I guess some relationships and friendships are just that way, aren’t they?  But, as I unpackaged all of it I reflected on just a little more.

We likely all have those friends and coworkers that we can “pick right up where we left off”.   And, all I can gather is that those kind of relationships are rooted in what I would describe as “Family”.   In the example above, I can tell you that my friend and I shared moments on the football field, wrestling mat, and doing what High School boys do that bonded us for life.  As with most High School teens we rode quite a roller coaster together navigating life.   As I think about it, I was truly blessed with an amazing group of friends and coworkers at every step and every chapter back then and continue to be today.   No matter what life has thrown my way; good, bad, or ugly; my “family” has my back.  Which brings me back to the opening question.  What does “family” mean to you?

The more I think about random things happening.  Perhaps they aren’t really that random.  Perhaps they are meant to serve a purpose.  Maybe that purpose is to allow us to examine all of the gems that are placed before us in this life.  Maybe it’s to recognize that were are given great gifts in the souls we encounter on a daily basis if only we open our eyes to allow it.  So the next time you have a “random” encounter I ask that you consider just what it is telling you and to appreciate the moment and the person.  Simply put… Appreciate the GOOD!  Appreciate the “Family” you are given!

And, to all those that I consider “Family”, thank you!   I am honored that you were placed in my life.  I’m honored by the amazing souls you are and all you do!
