Recharging Through Connection

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a conference with over 300 environmental health professionals. Just at face value this conference was outstanding! There were a myriad of excellent speakers on leadership, sustainability, and general environmental health. But, what made it most rewarding was the ability to recharge my passion and remind myself of the great work we all do.  Simply put, it was the opportunity to connect.

In this instance, like many times in my career, it came through interaction with my peers. Regardless of level of experience, I became a student to many of them as they shared their wisdom from the field and beyond. It is interesting how sometimes the informal discussions are the most worthwhile. In addition, it was great to touch base with old friends and make new. In many ways, we understand each other on a different level because of what we go through day to day or have weathered in the past.

Perhaps this is true in your profession as well. Do you have those people that you would call “your people“? Those that you connect with in a way that is reassuring and extremely supportive? I sure hope so! If not, I encourage you to develop those relationships. They are not only great for your professional well-being, but also your mental well-being. I find myself truly blessed to be surrounded by so many amazing individuals in my profession. Each one of them brings qualities to the table that make me better. I’m thankful for them and thankful for the opportunities. I am given to grow! THEY simply contribute to the best version of me!

This message was professional relationships that transcend into some of the best friendships I’ve had. I’m not sure if you’ve been blessed enough to find “your people” where you work or in your profession, but I sure hope you have outside of work if nothing else. We all need that space in our lives to be whole and to thrive. Here’s to colleagues we consider friends, opportunities to learn and grow, and the ability to never stop learning!
